POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating activities occurring on the nursing units by assisting patients with care, performing technical, clerical and receptionist duties, and maintaining the physical environment of the area.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with patient care, appropriate to the age and respective level of growth and development.
Performs clerical functions, answers telephone, takes messages and communicates information appropriately.
Records and reports all pertinent information to Registered Nurse.
Demonstrates an understanding of equipment used in department.
Attends unit meetings and mandatory in-services.
Transcribes physician orders and confers with Registered Nurse regarding scheduling of patient activities, medications and tests, and signs name to transcribed orders.
Responsible for ordering and re-ordering office supplies and general supplies.
Works as a team member, maintaining excellent interpersonal relationships.
Transports patient within hospital, take and record vital signs, respond to Code blues throughout the hospital. Assists with keeping the environment neat and clean.
Use Universal Precautions when tasks being performed, present the possibility of exposure to blood or body fluids.
Adheres to the Standards of Nursing Care and the policies and procedures of the hospital.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
May be required to work another nursing unit and/or shift if staffing mandates.
Participate in disaster drills and in Performance Improvement activities.
Assists in the orientation of new staff.
Maintains patients rights and confidentiality of patient information.
Documents all cares performed in computerized charting.

SPECIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or GED required
CPR certification
Skills
Typing and computer skills helpful
Ability to obtain vital signs
Ability to provide personal care/hygiene to patients
Good oral communication skills
Knowledge of medical terminology
Good telephone etiquette
Ability to follow orders
Dependability in performing simultaneous tasks
Ability to function under stress
Computerized charting
Experience
No experience necessary.

Exposure to hazardous materials, communicable disease, combative and verbally abusive patients.
Physical Requirements
Requires walking, standing, and bending
Exert 50-150 pounds of pulling/pushing force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently; positioning of patients over 150 pounds requires the use of the patient lift and/or the assistance of another staff member.

The Patient Care Assistant and Critical Care Technician will strictly abide by Barnesville Hospital’s policy on confidentiality. The employee will refrain from discussing confidential information with patients, other employees, or persons outside the hospital recognizing both the ethical and legal implications involved.
