Notes to Applicant |
10 East Neuro Step Down Unit is a fast-paced unit with an exciting, unique, and intellectually challenging work environment, specializing in the care of neurosciences patients. The bed capacity is 31, with 25 Step Down beds and 6 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) diagnostic study beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:3 in Step Down; 1:5-6 in the EMU, with flexible staffing to 1:2 for post tPA patients. Types of patients include those with stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor, neuromuscular disease, craniotomy, traumatic brain injury, and spine surgery. Neuro Step Down patients require specialized care and monitoring of external ventricular drains, lumbar drains, and IV drips to manage blood pressure and cerebral pressure. We are participating in ground-breaking research trials to improve the well-being and quality of life for patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The EMU is a central component of the only NAEC Level 4 Epilepsy Center in the state, providing 24-hour video EEG surveillance to both adult and pediatric patients. The 10 East nursing staff is part of the interdisciplinary Stroke Team, and plays a key role in the WVUM Comprehensive Stroke Center program. 10 East provides exceptional learning opportunities with a wide variety of acutely ill patients; a comprehensive orientation program and a supportive work environment for newly-hired nurses. The physicians and nurses work collaboratively along with other disciplines and mid-level providers to meet the complex needs of our patient population and ensure quality outcomes. Our weekend nurses are a high-performing group with exceptional teamwork and comradery. |
