POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, and according to standard procedures, compounds and dispenses medications and pharmaceutical supplies upon receiving orders from physicians.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reviews, interprets, and dispenses prescriptions for inpatients using patient profiles to ensure that rational doses have been prescribed and that adverse drug interactions or allergic reactions will not result from the administration of the prescribed agents.
Contacts and confers with physician if there are any questions or irregularities regarding prescriptions.
Ensures regular rounds are made to nursing units to pick up physician’s orders, delivers medications in a timely manner to provide appropriate patient care and also checks queue on computer.
Consults with physicians and nursing staff members concerning the availability, form, side effects, and possible drug interactions of new as well as currently used drugs.
Types prescription information for identification and use of medication, and attaches label to the container following standard operating procedures.
Maintains inventory and records on narcotics and other drugs as required by law. Inspects pharmacy inventory to ensure that drugs which are outdated or adulterated are removed from stock and replaced.
Maintains records on outpatient prescriptions filled according to standard operating procedures.
Prepares sterile products, including respiratory treatments, IV additive solutions, and parenteral nutrition as required using aseptic technique with the barrier isolator.
Responds to Code Blue and Rapid Response Calls. Prepares drugs as needed. Advises on doses and compatibilities.
Advises/consults with patient and families. Takes overnight call and is responsible for pharmacy services during on-call work hours.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Additional duties may include in-service education, stock and crash cart surveys, quality improvement monitoring, drug usage evaluation reviews, and P&T Committee participation. Also will assist physicians on patient rounds when needed.
Directly supervises all supportive personnel including technicians, interns, and externs as required by law. Ultimately responsible for actions of supportive personnel.
Performs other duties as directed by the Director that are in the scope of the individual’s knowledge, skills and experience.
Other duties that may be asked of the employee that is in the scope of the employee’s knowledge, skills, and education.

SPECIFICATIONS
Education/Licensure
Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy, and licensed and registered in the state of Ohio.
Skills
Must be able to follow written and verbal directions
Experience
Completion of pharmacy internship
Work Environment
Potential exposure to various chemicals and antineoplastic agents.
Physical Requirements
Occasional prolonged standing or walking

The Staff Pharmacist will strictly abide by Barnesville Hospital’s policy on confidentiality. The employee will refrain from discussing confidential information with patients, other employees, or persons outside the hospital recognizing both the ethical and legal implications involved.

Good verbal skills necessary to communicate with other hospital personnel, physicians, patients, family, and visitors.
