POSITION SUMMARY
Provides professional nursing care, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, to assigned patients according to established standards and policies.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administers direct care to assigned patients appropriate to their age and respective level of growth and development.
Records and reports all pertinent information to Registered Nurse.
Complies with the standards of nursing care and the policies and procedures of the nursing department and hospital.
Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment for patients and personnel. Adheres to established safety policies and procedures.
Cooperates with unit staff to achieve department goals and objectives.
Maintains patients’ rights and confidentiality of patient information.
Attends unit meetings, team conferences, and serves on committees, as needed.
Maintains professional growth and development through seminars and workshops.
Observes proper technique in performance of sterile procedures.
Administers medications and narcotics, in accordance with established standards and procedures and keeps self undated to new medications.
Assists with patient/family education.
Participates in discharge planning.
Demonstrates an understanding of specific equipment used in the Medical/Surgical unit.
Uses universal precautions when tasks being performed present the possibility of exposure to blood or body fluids.
Works as a team member.
Adheres to policies regarding work schedules and time off.
Works on other units as needed, as census changes and staffing needs arise.
Performs dressing changes per physician’s order.
Documents all cares performed in computerized charting.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
May be required to work another nursing unit and/or shift if staffing mandates.
Participates in disaster drills.
Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement Program.
Other duties that may be asked of the employee that are in the scope of the employee’s knowledge, skills, and education.

SPECIFICATIONS
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing
Currently licensed in the State of Ohio
Has successfully completed and approved pharmacology course or passed the OSPNA pharmacology test in order to give medication
CPR certified
Skills
Ability to provide personal care/hygiene to patients
Ability to perform fingersticks and obtain vital signs
Possess good oral and written communication skills
Telephone skills
Ability to function under stress
Typing skills helpful
Computerized charting
Experience
No prior experience necessary.
Work Environment
Exposure to hazardous materials, toxic substances, body fluids, communicable diseases, combative and verbally abusive patients.
High stress area
Physical Requirements
Requires walking, standing, bending.
Exerts 50-150 pounds of pulling/pushing force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently.
Positioning of patients over 150 pounds requires the assistance of another staff member.
CONFIDENTIALITY
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will strictly abide by Barnesville Hospital’s policy on confidentiality. The employee will refrain from discussing confidential information with patients, other employees, or persons outside the hospital recognizing both the ethical and legal implications involved.
