Description POSITION SUMMARY
Coordinates and provides professional nursing care to individuals or groups or patients with complex needs, according to established standards and practices. Nurses care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent or disabled. Under general supervision, they deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process or assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established philosophy. Nurses effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. ER Nurses provide care for patients from various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ER Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of ER Nurses include (but are not limited to):

Collects current symptoms as well as detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.

Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.

Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.

Initiates corrective action whenever information form monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.

Records patients’ current vital signs.

Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments.

Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, intranasal, and IV) and records prescribed medications.

Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.

Provides IV therapy.

Cleans and bandages wounds.

Provides basic, beside care.

Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.

Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.

Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.

Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.

Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.

Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.

Follows Universal Precautions and Body Substance Isolation.

Maintains open lines of communication between patients, their families and medical staff.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Completes required orientation as directed by facility.

Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.

Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.

Upholds HIPAA regulations.

Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.

Other duties that may be asked of the employee that is in the scope of the employee’s knowledge, skills, and education and within the prudent operation of the hospital.

Every employee is expected to follow all Barnesville Hospital policies and procedures, safety precautions and standards, guest relation standards, and to support and participate in hospital compliance program and in programs within his/her department to maintain and monitor quality improvement.

SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Current nursing license and in good standing with the State of Ohio licensing board.
Ability to work close suspension and under stress.
Minimum of one (1) year Emergency Room (ER) Nurses experience preferred.
BLS, ACLS and PALS required.

Skills
Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
Demonstrates leadership, managerial ability, and good interpersonal relationships.
Demonstrates quality customer service in all aspects of nursing care and interdepartmental relationships.
Has the ability to apply sound principles of administration and supervision, is skilled in the problem-solving process, makes independent judgments when appropriate, handles authority maturely and rationally.
Displays ability to change own attitude or behavior as called for by changing circumstances, demonstrated the ability to respond positively to changing circumstances, so as to maximize the opportunity or minimize the problem
Has the ability to prioritize needs.

Work Environment
Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing, so they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. Because of the fast-paced and variable environment of the emergency rooms.
ER Nurses must possess good stress coping skills and be able to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. They must be able to work accurately around frequent interruptions. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious disease. In addition, they treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative.

Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to bend, lean and stoop without hindrance; full range of body motion.
Fine motor skills
Visual acuity; normal range of hearing.
Exerts 50-150 pounds of pulling/pushing force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Positioning of patients over 150 pounds requires the assistance of another staff member.

CONFIDENTIALITY
The Registered Nurse will strictly abide by Barnesville Hospital’s policy on confidentiality. The employee will refrain from discussing confidential information with patients, other employees, or persons outside the hospital recognizing both the ethical and legal implications involved.

COMMUNICATION
Internal
Must have good verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with all hospital personnel, physicians, patients, families, visitors and clergy.
External
Other health care facilities, physician’s offices, physicians, patients after discharge and vendors.
