The Independent Living Specialist is responsible for assisting residents with developmental disabilities and related learning challenges with living skills development, health maintenance, personal care and social and emotional development. The position is responsible to implement the Person Centered Plan, attend to the individual’s personal care needs, respect the individual’s privacy and home environment, provide transportation as required and maintain documentation. This position will work in a team environment and will provide services that enrich the lives of our consumers. An emphasis is placed on creating an environment that maintains and promotes independence and supports the individuals to experience a full-autonomous life. The position will assist the individuals in participating in traditional daily and weekly activities such as shopping, going to the movies, enjoying hobbies, attending worship services, etc.

Activities include but are not limited to the following:
• Enhanced skill building with individuals in their apartment and in the community.
• Maintain and promote the individual’s independence by implementing the Person Centered Plan.
• Respect the privacy and home environment where services are being provided.
• Participate in activities as part of the treatment team that may include meetings, trainings and committees.
• Act as a role model demonstrating positive communication and good social skills and emotional intelligence.
• Provide transportation for the individual as required to carry out the goals and services of the individuals Person Centered Plan.
• Transport and/or accompany residents as required for appointments and community activities.
• Ensure safety curriculum is implemented and followed by individuals in real life situations.
• Oversee the safety and well-being of the individuals.
• Maintain documentation as required.
• Advise their supervisor and/or upper administration regarding the individual’s medical and dietary concerns.
• Attend to personal, self-care, and other needs that the individual cannot independently accomplish.
• Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Center’s culture, values and mission.
• Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.
• BS/BA degree in Psychology or related field.
• At least 1 year of experience working with people with development disabilities or special needs.
• This position has regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with individuals receiving services, therefore, is required by law to be fingerprinted for a criminal history record check under OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities).
• Must have a valid New York State Driver’s License
• Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances are warranted.
• Ability to meet physical and mental requirements.
