The Manager, Product & Package Engineering will support PDI as a leader and innovator within a dynamic R&D Product Develop Team. He/she will be a key member of a cross functional Core Team charged and be responsible for managing multiple, interrelated work-streams, to ensure all critical milestones are met and deliverables completed on time and budget. The Manager, Package Engineering will interact with the other cross-functional team members as well as extended team members from across the organization, ensuring strong connectivity, provide leadership and technical guidance.

Finally the Manager, Product & Package Engineering will foster and develop a team of direct reports to exceed the expectations on core competencies and customer connectivity.


Responsibilities include leading the design, development and execution of R&D programs supporting product development and functional support of the existing Environment of Care & Intervention Care portfolios. This includes providing leadership to direct reports and cross functional team members to ensure product development programs are executed timely, compliant and to meet the high standards aligned with PDI’s mission.

She/he will also assist in the leadership and implementation of an organizational structure that supports successful delivery of innovation, both internal and external in the scope and timing defined by PDI’s strategy and business needs and collaborates with all critical cross functions produce high quality products that satisfy customer needs.

Leadership and Management

• Reinforces PDI’s culture and values, and drives change where needed to increase alignment with those goals.
• Identifies departmental needs and assist with recruits/hires/promotes personnel as appropriate.

Technical Expertise

Lead the day to day R&D Packaging Engineering support across product development Core Teams. Lead the overall research, development, supplier qualification and commercialization of new packaging materials. Be the primary technical resource for PDI colleagues on any and all packaging related topics.

Develop specifications for new packaging materials
• Determines what testing is required to support a new specification
• Compiles and evaluates test data
• Drafts specification and reviews with appropriate team members
• Issues a new packaging specification for approval

Train Packaging Group members and other PDI technical colleagues
• Creates and updates training presentations with information specific to the target internal audience
• Gives training presentations to various stakeholders

Prioritize day to day work of the Packaging Group engineers, scientists and technicians
• Evaluate workload versus available resources
• Work with other internal functions to insure that the Packaging R&D group is providing support in a timely manner

Benchmarking of all competitive product packaging
• Benchmark current and new packaging technologies and use this information to provide recommendations to the Core Team on their selection of packaging materials.


Bachelor of Science in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited program

Technical knowledge of packaging, e.g., flexible films, rigid containers/injection molding, cartons, and corrugated; FDA and/or EPA Regulated Environment

Must have extensive experience in packaging-related business needs and comprehensive knowledge of the competitive landscape. Desired Experience:
• Flexible Barrier Films including sterile barrier packaging
• Plastic Molding Technologies
• Sealing Technologies
• Cartons & Corrugate Shippers
• Packaging Production Equipment
• 3D Modeling & Printing (SolidWorks)

Ability to author and or review protocols, lab notebooks, reports, SOP’s, and specifications

• A minimum of ten years relevant experience in product engineering and/or packaging development
• Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques
• Knowledge of packaging related production equipment and robotics experience
• Understanding of the product development and change control processes

• Must have excellent communication & project management skills
• Experience leading technical engineering teams
• Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple projects of varying complexity
• Experience in the management of intellectual property
• Knowledge of standards and regulatory requirements which guide EPA and FDA regulated products.
• Computer skills: TOPS or Cape, Solidworks or Creo, AutoCAD, Adobe, and Minitab.
