JOB SUMMARY

Area and Organizational Information: Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County was founded in 1997, and is made up of four Clubs – in Anacortes, La Conner, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley, and two extension school-based sites in Mount Vernon. Current membership for the organization is approximately 1,700+ youth ages 6-18 annually – with a daily attendance of 550. The organization is headquartered in Mount Vernon, and our administrative office currently houses the six members of the Mission Support Team. The total Skagit County population is approximately 120,000 – and the County is positioned nearly equidistant between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC. With just about an hour of drive time to either, the County is positioned well for enjoying the Cultural benefits each provide, without the living expense or regular traffic present in a metropolitan area. The community is attractive to those interested in enjoying the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and the mountains of Washington State. Skagit County is home to the nationally recognized annual Tulip Festival held in April that brings spectators in from all over the world.

 

Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County Mission Statement: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

 

General Description: Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director, the Director of STEM Initiatives is responsible for the overall success & completion of the third year of STEM programming, for a 3-year grant program. Through a grant from Tesoro Refining, the Boys & Girls Club STEM Initiatives kicked off in Clubhouses, Extensions, Schools, and other collaborative partners and agencies throughout Skagit County. Focused on increasing members’ interest in STEM learning, STEM opportunities, and resiliency in STEM challenges, the STEM program is delivered after-school at all the Club sites throughout the school year. The STEM Director leads projects, short field trips, and STEM outreach initiatives. Operational leadership includes: program and services development, delivery, data collection, analysis and evaluation; training of staff; resource management; strategic growth; resource development; stewardship of partners and STEM specific donor-investors; implementation of Tesoro STEM Centers in our Clubhouses. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County have been recognized as the premier provider of Youth Development Programs in our area through targeted outreach initiatives, strategic partnerships with schools and local governments, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)

  • Oversees planning and evaluation of year’s STEM programs and priorities
  • Coordinates design of curriculum and assessments with staff
  • Leads implementation of a comprehensive STEM program
  • Ensures the administration of all STEM programs
  • Assists staff in evaluating and improving their methods and instructional materials
  • Works with Associate Executive Director to increase STEM partnerships & pursue funding opportunities
  • Provides information to the community & interested parties about STEM Initiatives and progress
  • Assists in development of all marketing materials needed for STEM Initiatives (social media & news)
  • Works with Mission Support team to recruit and manage all STEM-based program volunteers
  • Works to increase overall organizational capacity through various methods that reflect organizational policies and procedures, strategies and goals, and values
  • Ensures full compliance with all policies, procedures and Board direction; maintains expense controls within established guidelines; ensures proper documentation and records are maintained
  • Provide a healthy and safe environment, ensuring that all facilities, equipment, and supplies are maintained.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with parents, community leaders and organizations
  • Develop and maintain public relations to increase the visibility of programs, services and activities within the community
  • Demonstrate ownership and pride in creating a comprehensive STEM Program to inspire all youth to consider 21st Century careers in the field, executing best practices in experiential and collaborative learning methods, and ensuring the Academic Success of members
  • Builds strong Collaborative Relationships internally and externally
  • Incorporate organizational Values of Fun, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Acceptance into all practices
Requirements

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in an area of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people
  • A minimum of two years’ work experience providing management of staff and resources
  • Considerable knowledge of the mission, priority outcomes, programs, and procedures of Boys & Girls Clubs and the principles and practices of non-profit organizations
  • Ability to recruit, train, and motivate staff
  • Ability to deal effectively with members, including discipline problems
  • Working knowledge of budget preparation, control, and management
  • Demonstrated ability working with community members, donors, parents, and young people
  • Strong computer skills required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Enthusiasm for mission and motivation to learn new skills on the job
  • Must be able to lift and move objects as heavy as 50 lbs
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines and goals
